Taken from collections of JPEGs sourced online, compressed cell phone photos, home interior magazines, and scenes from movies, Jonathan Chapline’s images are collaged via Photoshop to create an alternate world. This world merges real and imagined spaces, creating both a digital simulation and a documentation of space. Chapline highlights familiar, yet unlikely objects, such as a disposable cup, a household plant, or an ashtray. The objects are simplified into hard edge shapes referencing vector lines and Photoshop polygon tools on the surface of the panel. For example, gradients of raindrops painted on top of the surface in “Emulated Landscape” create the notion of a windowpane without having to describe one. This vocabulary plays into the idea of using simple marks to create larger overarching ideas.
Chapline’s first solo show with The Hole was Material Memory in November of 2018. He has participated in numerous group shows and art fairs with The Hole, as well as exhibited across the United States and internationally. Recent exhibitions include The Thousand and One Nights, curated by Maria Brito at Artual Gallery, Beirut; Material Memory at The Hole, New York; EXTRA at The Hole, New York; Reading Between the Lines at Hashimoto Contemporary, San Francisco. Recent art fairs with The Hole include ZONA MACO in Mexico City; UNTITLED Miami in Miami Beach; EXPO Chicago in Chicago; Contemporary Istanbul in Istanbul; VOLTA in Basel.
